A total gut reno is hard enough but when you're doing a condo where the previous owner was a reclusive hoarder for the last thirty years, it can be quite overwhelming. Sammy was reliable, professional, and thorough. He's the kind of guy who takes pride in his craftsmanship, paying attention to the smallest details. As the pictures can attest, this was no easy task. All plumbing needed updating. The floors were unsalvageable. Electrical was a mess. The whole unit looked like a slum. Sammy rose to the challenge, tackling each task with unrelenting energy. The plumbing was especially tricky, he had to go to the unit below mine and poke a hole through their ceiling to access the drain pipes. Now my bathroom is a dream to spend time in. The kitchen had the original avocado green appliances, and none of them worked. The stove was encrusted with grease from decades of neglect. The cabinets were not even fit to be burned as firewood. As it looks now, my friends are envious of my kitchen. Everybody thinks it's Scavolini (it's actually IKEA). My bedroom is "dreamy" as a female friend put it. Sammy didn't have any problems going to Leslieville to pick up some IKEA sliding doors I sourced through Craigslist and installing them on the built in closet. All in all, i was quite satisfied with the work done. Of course, all the usual reno headaches were there. But with a lot of patience, a little humor and a healthy dose of red wine, well, I made it. Samy, owner of SmartHome Handyman was contracted to renovate a rough basement into an appealing 1-bedroom apartment in our recently purchased home in Bloor West Village. We had a very specific vision of what we wanted, and Samy came up with ingenious solutions for problems all the way from replacing the antiquated plumbing to installing unique diagonal hardwood. He undertook a wide variety of tasks -- cement work, electrical wiring, appliance installation, cupboards, sliding antique doors, central vacuum system, lighting fixtures, washer/dryer installation, and ceramic tiles. We get fulsome praise whenever people see the apartment, and when we put out a listing, we had a lineup of potential renters and we rented the apartment within a day of listing.

Samy was excellent! He came on prett short notice and got the job done in time for our move in date. He stayed later and even working on the weekends to get the job done on time. We got removed the mirrors and vanities from the 2 bathrooms and replaced them with new ones. We changed the backsplash in the kitchen, added handles to all the cabinets, installed a new shower set in the master bathroom. We changed abot 6 light fixutures (including chandilear lighting). We also had him help us custom make the guest and master closets. We added a few extra jobs here and there (like adding light dimmers, etc) and he was accomadating for them. His price was good and he service was excellent. he was a pleasure to work with. Will be recommending him to any friends that do projects in the future. He also told us he guarentees his work for 1 year, which made us feel at ease about any possible problems. Will be using him again in the future. We were looking for estimates for the whole summer of 2010. Many contractors came; some of them gave us completely bogus estimates and worst, some of them never called back (e.g. Sonoma Contracting). Sammy kept his word and came at the time of the appointment and in few days e-mailed us a detailed estimate, based on our requirements. The project was finished in time, on budget and followed all our specs. Sammy was always listening to our suggestions and came with solutions for everything. The project included: framing, electrical, insulation, dry-walling, tapping, painting, flooring (engineered floor and tiles), doors installation. Sammy is a good contractor and a friendly person and I would recommend him for any basement renovation project.
