Beyond my expectations

The workmanship was beyond incredible. Perfect. Malcolm measured twice (visited twice). He brought a team member Carolina to work with him. So impressive that he had a woman carpenter. They were organized in their set up and clean too!!
A 100% success. Laundry room and ensuite bathroom.

Custom wall unit

We did not know Malcolm and hired him based on reviews we saw online. All of them were excellent so we met with him, liked him, felt he really understood our needs, and went ahead with the project. We wanted a 10’ long wall unit to the ceiling for our condo dining room, in the style of other older furniture pieces we already had.
Malcolm listened and made excellent suggestions for how to design and build it. The craftsmanship we got is truly outstanding. The unit was made off site and assembled here over two days. He and his helper took every precaution to protect our wood floors and other furniture, and even vacuumed to be sure our place was spotless after the installation was completed.
We love it and admire it every day. A truly beautiful addition to our home.
I unreservedly recommend Malcolm if you are looking for really fine workmanship.

Fantastic, Professional Work

Malcolm is a superb, master craftsman, who is also a pleasure to work with. Everything he does is of the absolute highest quality. He is also punctual, and very attentive to the client’s needs. Malcolm custom built a very large (and relatively complicated to install) storage unit as well as various other cabinets for me. I could not recommend him more highly.

Museum room design and construction

I have a rather unique and old collection: Halloween antiques ranging in age from 80 to 100 years old. It had been a dream of mine to have a "hobby room" with lighted, custom cabinets and dimmers designed to showcase and protect my collectibles so that I could enjoy them year round. As Malcolm had designed our kitchen several years earlier and we couldn't have been more pleased with the results, the first contractor I spoke to was Malcolm.

The day he said 'yes' he began to send me pics of visual inspiration and ideas for the museum room. These included photographs of the Pitt River Museum in England, and assorted "cabinets of curiosities". Any apprehension I had about converting our rec room in our East York bungalow into the Museum Room of my dreams dissipated.

There are a whole bunch of things about working with Malcolm that are hard to beat. He works with you, not for you. He is a font of creativity and ideas. He brings a passion for his craft and is a true craftsman. He takes an enormous amount of pride in his work. Once the spark is lit in him on a particular project, you just have to let him work, and let him do what he does best -- create. He's uncompromisingly picky and discerning -- if any of his crew do something that is not 100% to his satisfaction, he has them redo it. Must drive them nuts, but as a homeowner I love it! There is never EVER an instance of having to have an uncomfortable conversation and point out to Malcolm that something is not quite up to his standards -- he is always one step ahead.

He is resourceful. If he can't find a piece of molding he wants, he'll make a mold of it and create it for you without even being asked. He's an unusually good problem solver. He's direct and honest and will tell you if he thinks you are making a choice in an appliance or design of fixture that you may regret later. He was instrumental in sourcing an antique style of cast iron gas fireplace that would complement the somewhat unusual atmosphere of my collection and it's vintage. I showed him a photograph of an Art Deco wooden mantle I liked and he built it. He even installed the marble surround for our fireplace.

Though I must have driven him crazy with all the various heights and sizes of cabinets needed to house my collection, which ranges greatly in size, he never showed it. I think he saw this as an opportunity to do something cool and complex that he had never done before and he was committed to making it amazing.

When we ran into an issue with a third party contractor I had brought in installing something improperly, and being quite shoddy, he called my attention to it and helped me manage them. He sourced and found an electrician who had experience with museum lighting, as the needs were quite complex, multiple separate switches and dimmers, pot lights in the ceiling, etc. He not only designed and built my cabinets and room, but he project managed the whole build.

I took photographs at every stage of the project, from before, to various stages of the demo, insulation and drywall, lighting, cabinet and fireplace install. You can view them all in this photo album on Flickr. https://www.flickr.com/photos/ghostofhalloweenspast/albums/72157688645478090

Basically, I think I've been spoiled rotten by Malcolm and his (fastidiously clean) team! And on the subject of the cleanliness of his team, they vacuumed and cleaned up EVERY day not just at the end.

It really is hard for any other contractor or supplier to come close to the standard he sets.

I would not hesitate to recommend Malcolm and his team, and we fully hope to work with him again in the future.

Kitchen cabinwts

Malcolm was an absolute pleasure to work with. He built my kitchen in a matter very few short weeks. He helped me with the design and had lots of great suggestions to help make my beautiful kitchen become a reality. The quality is top notch and attention to detail is unsurpassed Malcolm and his team were very tidy and made sure everything was cleaned up after they had done the work. They did everything as per schedule and did not miss any deadlines When I had a couple of very small issues they came back immediately to touch them up and make everything perfect I would not hesitate to recommend Malcolm to build anyone's kitchen. One thing that I liked the most was that he did a template of all the cabinetry and island so that I had an opportunity to walk around and feel the kitchen before it was put in place and know that everything fit to size properly

Most excellent custom bookcase / cabinet for living room

We live in a very nicely renovated home in the Leaside area but our living room was lacking the design quality of the rest of our home; the Ikea bookcases we had for many years were originally purchased for our condo and were looking tired and out of place. We wanted to upgrade this most-used space in our home and sought out a fine carpenter to help us refine and implement our vision of a modern bookcase cabinet.

After meeting with a few contractors, we decided to go with Malcolm because of the many positive and authentic reviews of his work online, his friendly personality, and the fact that he quickly understood what we were looking for. He also priced very competitively, promised a timely completion of work, and his workshop is located in our area.

It was a complete pleasure to work with Malcolm. He did everything he said he would do. He did it all when he said he would, for the price he promised, and he cleaned up our space as much as possible after he left each day of work (we have a young child so this is particularly important to us). Most importantly, we are absolutely thrilled with the design and finish quality of the work. He quite literally understood exactly what we were looking for and produced it for us. His creativity really came in handy with the small details such as where the bookcases met the crown mouldings along our ceiling. Our new bookcase/cabinetry is top-quality and we are certain that we added to our property value with this minor renovation.

We could not recommend Malcolm higher. He is a super nice guy who very calmly worked with us to ensure we were happy. He was communicative, paid very careful attention to the finest details, and delivered an excellent product. This review may sound over the top positive but we are very happy with how this project came out and wish nothing but continued success for Malcolm.

He is truly a master carpenter and we will most certainly turn to him for our next millwork project.

Thanks Malcolm!

Assisted Review

An assisted review is collected by a contractor on behalf of the homeowner after their work is completed. The homeowner must confirm the text of the review and may make any changes she or he deems appropriate. The homeowner then assigns the contractor a review score out of 10. Assisted reviews receive the same scrutiny as other reviews and must follow our review guidelines.

When I gutted my kitchen and bathroom Skip did all my cabinetry. Since both rooms are small and I like

lots of storage, I asked Skip to come up with some innovative solutions to maximize the space. He did

not disappoint. Since my house is old and has moldings everywhere, Skip did an excellent job of

matching those on the cabinetry.

I am very pleased with my new kitchen and bathroom. I have far more storage than I had before and the

look is elegant. Skip was a pleasure to work with. He is very attentive to detail and an excellent

craftsman. He is very neat and reliable.

If I need any more cabinetry, I will definitely ask Skip to make it. I highly recommend him.

Kitchen cabinetry construction (and maintenance)

This review is a long time coming, but I was reminded of Malcolm's skill and professionalism when it recently came to our attention that our cleaners had damaged the gorgeous custom kitchen Malcolm built for us in early 2014. Because of their careless use of wet sponges, water had infiltrated cabinet doors and caused the finish to lift. Malcolm came over, had a look, suggested a reasonable and affordable solution, and executed the whole thing in less than a week.
We were thrilled with our kitchen when it was first built, and amazed at its functionality as well as its beauty; there were a lot of custom solutions that needed to be figured out, and Malcolm executed it perfectly, and an a surprisingly short time frame (it's worth knowing that while many custom cabinet makers need months of lead time, Malcolm can manage most normal-sized kitchen projects in just a few weeks.)
So when we noticed it had been damaged, we were crushed; Malcolm came to the rescue and took care of the issue, restoring our kitchen to its former glory. Try getting Ikea or Home Depot to do that! Thanks Malcolm!
