We planned a complete overhaul of a 2200 sq foot condominium following our retirement. Steve's team at Towne Contracting was able to deliver on our vision, making our project a huge success. Renovations are never easy as even with a designer it is never possible to plan every detail and every obstacle in advance. However, there are 3 reasons why we would highly recommend Towne Contracting: 1. Flexibility Steve's team showed tremendous flexibility as plans changed and unforeseen circumstances presented themselves. They also did a great job working with a designer they had never met and a condo management team with very strict rules. We also hired a separate company for our flooring and Steve worked very well in liaising with them. 2. Quality They didn't stop until everyone was happy with the final product, and took pride in their work. This is very important in a business where some contractors try to get in and out as quickly as possible. The project went on longer than expected, but this was largely because of the scope of the project got larger with time. 3. Pricing Their pricing is very competitive for the quality that was delivered. We added many additional jobs from our original contract, and Steve was very flexible in pricing these. Thank you Steve for a job well done! We are very happy with the final product!

Unfortunately can't give a ten. Did 2 bathrooms for me. They look great but details were not completed. Steve came to see the job and provided a written estimate for the first bathroom. Milan did the work and kept to schedule and price. The second bath I got only a verbal estimate. Both prices were fair but second bathroom was not completed in time. I think Milan was working another job at same time. Some days little work was done. While he was always nice and may have been well intentioned he did not deliver what he said he would. He also talked me out of things I wanted. He told me he would patch the old drywall when I asked for and was willing to pay for new drywall. He didn't seem interested in replacing the fan and so reduced the price. I would have rather solved the fan issue. He seemed anxious to get to the next job. Unfortunately, Steve never came to see the final job. I have fixed some of the things that Milan never came back for. We removed the pop-up plug for the bathtub that never held it's seal and got a rubber plug. Not what I wanted for my new bath. I really liked these guys and would have loved to have rated them better. This may be a case of growing pains where the owners have lost control of the finished product. I waited a year to write this review ignoring many prompts from this site during that time. Did Steve ever wonder why?

Hello Lisa Thanks you for taking the time to write this review. I am sorry that you were not 100% satisfied with our project. You were a pleasure to work for, however I feel that you might of taken some assumptions that are not correct. I actually did come by to see the finish projects and I do believe that it was one of the nicest bathrooms we have worked on. We didn't intend on talking you out of features you wanted, it's just that in a condominium we work with limitations and there are things that just can't be done. I wish you would of brought these items to my attention. Thanks again Steve

Our Bathroom was a mess! our floor had severe water damage and it was leaking into the garage damaging the ceiling there. We found Towne Contracting through a friend and I am extremely glad we did. They were very professional, very organized, and did extremely good work. They were always on time (they even came in a snowstorm on a day when we stayed home from work). Our bathroom looks gorgeous now. My wife and I are extremely happy. We will be contacting them for all our home projects.

Dan and Tom were an incredible pleasure to work with. They treated my small bathroom reno as if it were a project ten times its value. Their work was dealt with a measure of great pride and it showed in the outstanding results. The space for my bathroom was an unusual configuration, but it never fazed Dan/Tom who have now made it by far the best looking bathroom in the house. They were gentlemen at all times, both with their work and with the environment they worked in. They were impeccably dedicated, several days working long into the evening. If I had any other project in my home, they would undeniably be the first whom I would go with. Thank you, Dan and Tom, so much for all your hard and outstanding work. Vladimir

Dan and his team did an amazing job. They were here every single day until the job was done. Fantastic attention to detail. You are very lucky if you get to use them.

I hired Towne to do a complete bathroom overhaul, and some specific work in the basement - potlights, and removing an old kitchen space. I hired them as a designer, to do the work for some of my clients. I couldn't be happier with them. Not only was their price reasonable, and their timeline was fantastic, and they worked hard but Steve and his team are a joy to deal with. I value trust when working with trades, and knowing I don't need to micro-manage them while they are on a job makes me happy. My clients are also very happy with the work, and with the respect they treated their house. They can't stop raving about the end result - and this comes from a couple that were very nervous going in to this renovation. I will use Towne again and again.

I purchased a completely outdated condo in Toronto with a view to gut and renovate: there were walls to come down, new floors to go in, and, most significantly, a new bathroom to be built from scratch. Steve and his crew did an absolutely amazing job. They really made sure that my vision came to life and they did it on budget! They also worked very well with the other contractors I had hired and made sure that everything ran as smoothly as possible. With any reno project - there are hiccups - Steve kept me calm and always found a wallet-friendly way to make it work! Hands down...best service and pricing around. Steve is not only a pleasure to work with, but he takes great pride in the work that he does --- that is not something that you can say about every contractor. In fact, the entire crew was pleasant, diligent and committed to making my home beautiful. I would recommend Towne Contracting to anyone and everyone!

After three houses and over a dozen significant renovation projects I can tell you that I am very pleased that we elected to go with Towne for two complete washroom overhauls. They did excellent quality work and stayed within the budget. They are organized, neat, and very clean and they offered helpful opinions that enhanced the projects. The only negative is that they were slower than expected but that is reflected in the quality of the work they do. I would have no trouble recommending Towne for any renovation project and will be using them again.

Dan from Towne Contracting was one of the few contractors who arrived to provide a quote on time and was genuinely interested in understanding what I wanted to achieve with the renovation. The work was done in a condo and this meant following rules about when they could work and they had to dispose of all materials off site. There were absolutely no complaints from anyone while the Towne crew was working in my condo. Some companies wouldn't even quote on the job because it was in a condo. Working with Dan was a pleasure. He provided regular updates and advice and always answered all of my questions. The master ensuite was completely gutted. They replaced the tub, shower and surround which was then fully tiled. They installed a new toilet, vanity with quartz countertop and faucet. Old floor tile was removed and the floor and walls were tiled. They had a plumber install a thermostatic shower valve and diverter. In the guest bathroom, a new vanity, sink and counter top were installed along with a new toilet, new floor and wall tile and the room was painted. The floor in the guest bathroom was replaced along with the toilet and vanity. Any project requires that both parties expend time and effort in making it a success. Towne was competitive and worked within my budget. The overall cost of my project was a few thousand above the quote, because of the higher end materials I purchased. There were some setbacks and issues that were addressed and Dan was basically unflappable throughout. Overall, they did a very good job and cared about the quality of the work. I am very happy with my new bathrooms (especially the Master bathroom with the thermostatic shower valve and rain shower head, recessed shelf in the shower and great floor and wall tile). I hope to call on Towne again for future projects.

Any advice to offer fellow homeowners facing a similar project?
Contractor quotes may not include a sufficient allocation for the quality of materials you want. Recognize that and plan for extra costs associated with this and additional work that you add. Timing can also be an issue. I picked out most of the materials in advance and this helped keep the renovation on schedule. It truly is a partnership throughout and working effectively with your contractor means constant communication. If both the homeowner and contractor act with honesty and integrity, the entire project runs smoothly. Dan was a great communicator. He wanted to ensure I was happy with the result. I was very grateful for that. A great resource for ideas is the web site/free app Houzz. It is an excellent resource for ideas no matter what room you are renovating.

WHY TOWNE CONTRACTING?
We chose Towne Contracting to do our main bathroom renovation (complete gut) after checking with several other contractors on HomeStars and a few outside of HomeStars. Steve was among the select number of contractors to actually get back to me for a quote where others would say they'd call back to meet, but never did.

Towne Contracting had one of the more competitive quotes out there and after asking what methods and materials they use for things like waterproofing, checking references and looking at the work in-person at one house, they were chosen for the bathroom renovation. What set them apart was their knowledge of building materials, offering helpful suggestions and options, and easygoing attitude.

Speaking with Steve, I was please to hear that he mentioned using DenShield (shower walls) and DITRA (under floor tiles) for waterproofing (sometimes other contractors would either mention products used for older methods of installing or not at all as if it's of no importance to the customer). I also requested that Schluter KERDI-BAND be used on the wall tile backer seams and along the floor edges for extra water tightness after coming across an informative video on Schluter's website and learning about the product.

THE RENOVATION
The scope of the job was a complete gut including: installing new floor tile, wall tile (including mosaic border and chair rail), tub & shower trim kit, vanity & sink, toilet, medicine cabinet, vanity light fixture, new exhaust fan (with a neat timer switch), priming/painting, and toilet paper holder & towel bars. They also checked into our tub plumbing not draining well plus some other little additional things we requested along the way (installing a new door, new door/window trim). Additionally, they added insulation on the outer facing wall and fixed exposed wires (thank you for pointing this safety hazard out) in our attic with a new junction box.

We had primarily Steve and Milan on-site for the renovation with Andre and Mike to help out. The bathroom was completely gut in one day. They were good about keeping things tidy by laying down an adhesive blue protective sheet along the floor, vacuuming, tidying up their tools, and taking the garbage with them.

Most of the materials we had purchased, but Towne Contracting helped source out the chair rail, pick up our bathtub, toilet, and tiles we selected as they were able to get a slightly better price since they have a contractors discount (keep that in mind if you're planning to select and buy your materials).

Punctuality was acceptable with the "crew" (2 - small bathroom) arriving around the same time each morning unless they were out picking up materials and left no later than 5-6pm (on the few long days - usually finished earlier as they're pretty quick).

With the house being 50 years old, we ran into some issues with not having any insulation behind the outer facing wall and Towne Contracting was great at offering a number of solutions along with prices in order to make a decision. The job was delayed a few days due to trying to source out some materials, waiting for some things to arrive on order and a big snowfall one day which is totally understandable. Along the way they had some questions about how high or where to place things and we appreciated that communication. They also provided some great ideas and solutions about how far to run the mosaic border around the room (good call guys!) and coming up with solutions for our tricky IKEA vanity & sink plumbing (note: try to avoid IKEA vanities if you can as the plumbing is not to North American standards) which turned out fine in the end.

As we tested out our bathroom while the reno was nearing its completion, we noticed a few things like a leak coming from the tub overflow which they were quick to address along with any other issues.

We are happy to say our tub now drains unbelievably quick after changing the plumbing which had build-up inside after years and years (even though it's older 1 1/4"? plumbing vs the 1 1/2" standard) compared to before where after a shower there'd be a pool of water about 1-2 inches high and take several minutes to drain.

It's such a pleasure to use our bathroom now. No longer do we have to go on vacation to use a decent bathroom! The finishing of the work is just beautiful and we love the look of the mosaic and chair rail. It was really a night and day transformation of our bathroom and we thank Steve and Milan for doing an amazing job. Their easy-going personalities, professionalism and knowledge made it an enjoyable experience.

We will be in touch with Towne Contracting again when it comes time to fix our other bathroom and any other jobs in the future.

For anyone new to home renovations, I highly recommend looking at Mike Holmes' book "Make It Right" which will educate you (as it did for me) more than you could imagine on what construction materials should be used, what's involved, and things to look out for. Note that one of the materials used in the bathroom for the shower backing is a touch out of date (older cement backer board if I recall vs DenShield). This will help you put together a list of things to ask to help weed out contractors who may still use older methods for installations such as using a scractch coat for floor tile installs (which offers NO waterproofing) instead of using Schluter DITRA (orange waffle-like waterproofing material with an uncoupling membrane). Just ask in general what the contractor will do to make sure your bathroom walls and floors are waterproof and EXACTLY what method and materials will be used. It's better if you already know the answers to the questions you're going to ask. Use the calls to help inform yourself further for what you might not know and research online about the products/methods mentions. Don't be afraid to call contractors back to follow up and ask if they use "X product" or "Y method" to do something.
