We had a bad experience with Spencer Contracting. We hired them to extend our chimney and install a liner during a second storey addition. We had some small issues with the mason they sent but Gordon Coleman sorted it out quickly and we thought all was well. Months later we discovered during a routine chimney inspection that the mason had installed a part which did not appear meet building code standards (the base support). It turned out it was made of the wrong kind of metal and should not have been in a wood burning fireplace where it would be exposed to flue gases (as it could leak toxic fumes). When I contacted Spencer they looked into it right away and their mason assured me the part was safe and was 'listed' even if it did not meet the building code. However I contacted the manufacturer of the part directly and they emailed me back confirming that the part was not meant to be exposed to flue gases. I gave Spencer the chance to come back and fix the problem, as long as they used another mason, but they told me it was not necesssary and everything was fine. We then were not able to pass our final building inspection due to the presence of this part. I met with Spencer contracting and told them I would be hiring another company to replace the part as I had given them a chance and they had refused. I also told Spencer that I would like them to cover the $1200 cost of replacement. They refused this offer as well and at one point actually said to me that the 'building code was out of date' and the part was fine. We had another company come in and do the work and have now passed our final inspection. I am surprised that on a contract worth $10,000 Spencer would quibble over $1200 on a potentially toxic issue, but this was indeed the case. I would not recommend Spencer Contracting and we will not be using them again.

We were late in the year starting our project and were concerned that we might not be able to find a contractor, after meeting with 6 different companies, my husband noticed there sign and after reviewing the project he knew that this was the company for us. Excellent workmanship, professional and well represented by Gord Colman. We were so pleased with the work that we also had them vinyl side the entire southern exposure of our semi-detached house. They completed the job on time and on budget and all my concerns were addressed immediately. I have found the company to help me complete my honey-to-do list and would recommend them to anyone for there renovation needs. Please note ours is not a project that they usually take on, but knowing our dilemma they came through for us and for that my family is grateful.

I had Spencer Contracting build a balcony on the 2nd floor above a porch which they also replaced at the same time. Within 6 months the floor of the balcony started to move off the edge of the roof below. Nick Spencer tried cheap ways to fix it but when he finally agreed (after 3 years) that it had to be replaced, he made me pay for it rather than admit it was his bad workmanship at fault. In the process, the roof above the porch was pierced and I now get rain pouring through the porch ceiling. He refused to fix that. The carpenter he employs is very talented but I will never hire the company again.

I recently used N. Spencer Contracting for a small job to replace rotting fascia boards and install new evestrough and downpipes on a back extension. Their quote was significantly lower than the well known roofers, and they came recommended by a neighbor. The installers confirmed all the required elements of the job before starting and verified on a couple of occasions during the day that the work was meeting my expectations which had never happened to me before. They worked carefully even meticulously and did not hurry the job at all. They also did a thorough clean-up afterwards.

This spring, early summer we had a new addition built off the kitchen area as well as a fantastic new deck. For us, this was a major job and we were very nervous about the scale of the project and the possibility of things going wrong. But, we quickly learned how competent Gord and his team are. Great workers and great guys! A nice combination! We wholeheartedly recommend them.

Nick had his roofer do a new roof for us 3 years ago. Two years ago it leaked in and did lots of damage. His roofer "sealed the seams" and said there was nothing else wrong. To his credit he did some repairs to the interior damage - though the quality of work was poor. Last year - it leaked in again. His roofer again just "sealed the seams". He said he wouldn't fix the inside damage and told us to "take him to court". This summer - a new leak appeared. His roofer said there was nothing wrong with his roof and it was leaking somewhere else. They did nothing. We hired a very reputable roofer who was appalled at the workmanship. They reused old flashing and nailed thru the membrane. No wonder it leaked! This guy is not to be trusted.

I enjoyed the artistic talent of the actual work team. The head of the crew was an amazing diligent worker(very artistic) and I would recommend him to anyone. Unfortunately I was on holiday when they came back to do minor repairs and finishing to straignten the fence and fix new cracks. The employees that were sent to do this have not finished and I expect they will return this month to put the sand between the bricks and fill a few cracks that I discussed not with the team but with the company owner. Somehow they ended up dumping all the fence hole sand into my plant garden and I have lost a few plants, however I am sure this will all be rectified and my rating move to a full 10. This not being done as discussed is lost somewhere in the communication between Nick and the team.

I’ve dealt with Spencer Contracting on three occasions, but have mixed feelings about the experience. The quality of the work has been consistently good, but other difficulties came up in the last job. I had a minor plumbing problem (a leaking pipe behind a basement wall). A small portion of the wall had to be taken out, the pipe repaired and the wall reconstructed. The plumbing portion of the job took between two to two and a half hours. I was charged for half a day’s work (four hours). "Oh, that’s standard," said the supervisor. Is it? Maybe so, but there was no discussion of this in advance--only when I was handed the invoice at the end of the job. Had I known I could have easily found an hour and a half to two hour's worth of other plumbing chores to make up for the work I had paid for. No. When I complained to the supervisor he told me "Maybe you should have gone with a handyman." Maybe he should have discussed that with me before agreeing to undertake the project in the first place. So I've been happy with the quality of the work of Spencer Contracting. They use good people. But the communication has been poor and the pricing has been inconsistent so . . . . caveat emptor.

Last year we undertook the restoration/renovation of a late 1920s house in the East End. We contracted N.Spencer Contracting to take on almost all aspects of this project including; rewiring the entire house, new plumbing, radiant heat flooring, gutting and building a new bathroom and kitchen, french doors, windows, building a covered veranda and fence as well as a host of interior finish jobs and detail work. We couldn't have been more pleased with the results. Gord and the team were fantastic throughout the entire project. Gord was always available by phone and inperson and the project team were the best we had ever worked with. Once the job began, the team was at the house every day util the project was completed. Even with living in the house for much of the project, the professionalism of Gord and his team kept our stress levels to a minimum. No easy feat! We couldn't recommend N. Spencer Contracting highly enough. They will be the only contractor on our list for any future projects.
