Chimney Repair and Capping Simple job. Repair a few rows of chimney bricks. Top it off with a cap.
Terrible at communications. Never return calls. Had to explain what I wanted done on numerous occassions. Then they almost messed it up. They forgot to cap it. They were going to just leave it open. Then they wanted to charge me extra for the cap. Just awful. Finally finished the job but put the oldest, cheapest cap they could find. Looks like it was probably just in their garage or something.
They subcontract out their work.
Avoid Contex Roofing.
Complete removal and replacement of old asphalt shingles To begin, Contex Roofing provided a reasonable and fair quote (I had 3 in total) on removing and replacing the old asphalt shingles on our old semi-detached home near Little Italy in May 2008. My initial contact was Trevor and he was a "go get'm" Sales guy. Very quickly replying to me and making sure Contex would start working right away. After making my initial payment, I was never told who my operations contact should be. Trevor seemed to disappear after my payment was processed. To make a long story short, the roof was done basically on time and a little over the estimate (apparently there was an additional set of shingles that had to be removed so the price jumped up about 15% from the quote). The issues I have with Contex came after - they left a horrible mess that had to be cleaned up (after several phone calls), they cracked our neighbours window (I assume from throwing debris off the roof), and worst of all, the roof leaked MORE after they fixed it. To address the above points - they did eventually clean up the yard, they did not ever address fixing our neighbours window (he ended up fixing it himself), and after several callbacks, they finally tended to further fixing the roof. Now, to my fault, Mike was back in November re-sealing some of the mortar on our roof, he told me I should replace the eaves troughs up there - which I have not yet done. The problem I have is twofold - 1, after I call them I don't hear anything back from them. They didn't call me (nor my Property Manager who takes care of our place) to confirm when they would show up, nor did they call either of us to tell us what they did or saw. It was only from me being so persistent that I ever found out what was going on with our property. 2 - Mike has let it be known that I should have replaced the eaves troughs - this was told to me in November. Why was I not told this May thru November when the work was originally done? Again, it goes back to their severe lack of communication. As such, as you'll see in my Title - "If you like a lack of communication - call Contex". So, after over $9,000 in repairs ($7k to Contex and $2k to someone replacing the ceiling where it was leaking), I still have more money to spend on replacing the eaves troughs. What bothers me the most is that why didn't Contex suggest and/or do this work a year ago? They're the experts - aren't they???
Roof reshingled 20 year old shingles stripped and replaced, along with front and back mansards, some wood replaced as well due to wear. Contex was the last of 5 quotes I got, and came in the lowest, a pleasant surprise after receiving quotes that were way out of the ballpark for a pretty basic job on a smaller sized house in bloor west village. Paul was prompt with the quote and within 2 days the materials were delivered. From the time of quote to completion was a week. The staff were quick responding to a few questions I had (ie. Arnold) and the roofers worked hard over 1.5 days to complete. Full cleanup, looks great, no problems at all. Definitely would recommend.
Strip and reshingle front elevation We had a 7 year old home with curling shingles on the front elevation that ended up lifting and being blown off in bad weather! With everything you see on TV these days about contractors we were definitely apprehensive about selecting a roofing company!
We contacted numerous roofers -we had a couple who wanted to charge a fee to come out to perform an estimate because we were 'out' in Milton; one who said they'd be out in a couple of weeks to do an estimate (despite telling them we thought we had exposed wood); and a couple including Contex who came out without issue.
Despite Contex being slightly more expensive, we chose them initially because of the professional, friendly, and timely pre-sales support from Phil and others that we had contact with at the main office. Phil also explained they would make every effort to expedite the process given our exposed roof.
Once we gave Contex the go ahead everything flowed like clock work. Did they expedite as promised? Did they ever! The dumpster and materials were delivered the next day, and the work started the day after that…on Saturday. The crew were amazing -friendly and respectful; informative and knowledgeable answering any questions asked; and man did they graft!!! They worked through until dusk leaving only a few bits and pieces to finish off. They cleaned up before leaving ~ to the point you wouldn't have known they'd been!
It rained and was windy all day Sunday, but they were back first thing Monday and finished off that morning...despite the major drop in temperature! [I'm a little late in writing this review]
All in all an excellent experience and we would have no reservations recommending them to family, or any one else. Any apprehension we may have had going into this quickly became admiration for a great outfit! A job well done Contex Roofing.
soffits, facia, eavestrough Needed to replace soffits, facia and eavestrough on half of my house. The price I was quoted was fair and the work quality was top notch and done on time. No issues whatsoever.
roofing, eaves, downspouts, soffit and fascia I needed urgent replacement to my flat roof, and winter was approaching. I called Contex Roofing to take care of my needs. Phil came to my house to discuss my roof replacement, and he recommended replacing the window casements, along with the eavestroughs, downspouts and fascia. My house is now very cozy, they did a superior job! Because my roof was an emergency fix, Contex made my order a priority.
Roof Replacement Contex's estimators appeared very knowledgable but the workers attention to detail was poor. They did some minor damage to other parts of the house and it took several calls to the company to get it fixed and to get the mess they left cleaned up.
Shingle roof and flat roof replacement I had my shingle peak roof and flat roof replaced in Oct 08 after raccoons made a hole in the roof.
The estimate was provided by Peter. He was helpful and reasonably responsive. However, after talking to the actual installation guys, do not rely on estimators. get the guys who come out to install the roof to provide input as well. We were recommended something called the Leaf Defier system which is a black sponge like material that fits in the eavestrough and stops leaves entering. However, as I found out this winter, while it may stop leaves, it causes excessive ice build up and overflow. during the freeze and thaw cycle, my front porch would be a skating rink as the eavestrough overflow would drip and freeze. My immediate neighbours with no eavestrough treatment did not experience this problem. I have a 6 month old baby so when I leave the house i have to be extremely careful as its very slippery. The interesting point as mentioned above, the installation guys said they had never seen this Leaf Defier system before but still went ahead and installed it. They said don't listen to the estimators as they aren't roofers.
I called Contex to fix the problem but the installer has cancelled twice already.
Now i have a bigger problem. The flat roof wasnt installed properly and now is causing leaking into the front room of the house which happens to be the kitchen (see photos). The water is leaking from 3 different locations - more worringly the water is coming through the light fixtures so now our kitchen is inoperable as we can't use the lights until the water dries. It drips when there is above zero temperatures causing the snow/ice to melt and seep into the kitchen ceiling. At night when its sub-zero, there's no dripping.
I've been trying to call them out of hours to come fix the problem but no one is around to respond. I have to call Avenue Road Roofing to come out to fix the leak. Hopefully they can stop the leaking and I will be able to recover my costs from Contex.
Overall I would say the estimator and flat roof team aren't worth the effort. The shingle roof guys were ok, worked long hours, so far did a good job and were helpful in keeping us informed.
“Dear Ivor, We are very sorry about the winter leak. As our contract clearly states, we do NOT warranty against ice damming. Your roofs do not leak in heavy sustained driving rains, but leak in minus 20 degree weather. This should tell you something. As for the leaf defier, the product is inert and cannot retain water. I will speak to production about the response time to your call. If you would like to meet on site for a full inspection, please call our office and I will be happy to meet with you. ”
re-roofing and installation of a roof cable Problems with water leakage due to ice daming as well as some roof damage led me to Phil Gilmour of Contex Roofing on the recommendation from others. This water leaking had persisted over the last two years but with Phil's advice, concerned manner and informed decisions on what could be done to solve a tricky situation, his crew re-shingled the damaged portion of my roof along with a water barrier underneath these shingles as well. With some leaking still appearing however,Phil and Contex returned and solved the problem with the installation of a roof cable and extra caulking for good measure. Throughout this process, Phil and his work crews have shown professionalism and dependable service, especially when my recall needed further attention. I would certainly recommend these people anytime to those looking for honesty and reliability in a roofing company. This work was completed in 2006 and 2007.
Chimney rebuild, new roof Contex was the only roofer (of 4) who actually measured BOTH inside and outside my house to confirm that the source of my leak was indeed the chimney (the others speculated). I was confident that Contex would direct address the leak, not just "patch over it." Phil at Contex was very helpful in explaining the issues to me (showed me pics, compared my chimney to others in my neighbourhood) and was honest about what did and didn't need to be done. It took several weeks after I signed the contract for them to start the work but that's because of the backlog of work and the rainy weather we had all summer. Contex is worth the wait. Both the chimney and roofing crews were professional and left the work site very clean.
Contex is not cheap but I'd rather pay for expertise and quality workmanship. The roofing estimate was in line with another well-known quality roofer, but it was Phil's commitment to and demonstration of superior customer service that won me over. THANK YOU PHIL. With my new roof and chimney, I have peace of mind for the next 20+ years!
